Chance To Shine Street

The Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket Foundation (L&RCF) delivers the Chance to Shine Street programme, providing free, informal, and accessible cricket sessions for young people aged 8 to 24 in disadvantaged, urban areas. The programme uses a fast-paced version of the game, played with a tapeball and plastic bats, so no prior experience or special equipment is needed.

Bringing cricket to the heart of urban communities with Chance to Shine Street.

More than just cricket

Chance to Shine Street is about more than just sport. Sessions are designed to increase aspirations, promote social cohesion, and develop important life skills like teamwork and confidence. The programme creates a safe and inclusive space where young people can have fun, socialise, and feel a sense of belonging in their local community.

How schools can help pupils access the programme

Since the Street programme is community-based, schools do not directly apply for the provision. Instead, the L&RCF partners with local sports halls, youth clubs, and community centres to establish cricket hubs in targeted areas.

However, schools can play a vital role in connecting their pupils with this opportunity by:

  • Signposting:Promote the free and local Chance to Shine Street sessions to pupils and their families through school newsletters, assemblies, and noticeboards.
  • Partnering:Work with the L&RCF to explore how the programme could benefit the school’s local community.
  • Contacting:Get in touch with the foundation’s Community team to learn about the location of the nearest Street hub and how to refer interested young people.

Requirements for accessing the provision
The programme is delivered in areas identified as most in need by the national charity Chance to Shine and the L&RCF. Participants do not require any equipment, and sessions are completely free to attend.
